Students of 10+2 mathematics are crazy about IIT. May be you are one of them too who desperately want to be a part of IIT. But, let me tell you. There is life other than IIT which can be as good as a life with IIT.
Here, I’m giving list of some institutes which can be said as alternative for IIT. This list covers those institutes where students of PCM 12th pass can apply. Some of these are very much around or better than IIT. Have a look:
- SCRA:
Special Class Railway Apprentice (SCRA) aka Railway Engineering is an examination conducted by UPSC for selecting candidates suitable for engineering department of Railway. It is a very royal job with large prospects. It is also the toughest exam at 10+2 level. There are just around 10 vacancies each year. Still lot of people sits for its exam. Also, your salary will start just after passing this exam. It is the dream course. - ISI:
Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) is a very old institute of mathematics, statistics, economics and computer science. It is best institute in India for Statistics and Mathematics and second best for Economics (after DSE). The pass-outs from this institute are very much in demand all over world. Placements are better than even IIMs. Above all there are no fees. Instead handsome stipends each month are given to the students. This in my sense is best alternative for IIT. Obviously, many students come to this institute after getting top ranks in IIT JEE. Some leave IIT after getting top ten ranks for ISI. - CA:
For mathematics branch students, CA is not the prime choice. Those who opt for CA after 10+2 with mathematics basically, if they don’t get selected somewhere for engineering. But, CA should not be just seen as a degree for commerce students. Mathematics students have high chances to do better in this course. CA aka Chartered accountant is the high earning job. You may work in a company or set-up your own company for auditing accounts. It is just like law. Every company needs service from a CA. As economy is booming and CA course is tough. This sector will be in more demand than else. - Actuarial:
Actuarial is something very much of same nature as CA. But, have more importance than CA. In India this course is conducted by India Actuarial Society. It is a new field in India. But, demands are very high all over world, not just in India. This course is not for everyone. Only sharp minded people are taken for this course. Basic requirement is mathematics as a subject in 12th with 75% for 10+2 students. 75% marks in mathematics just say the requirement needed for being an actuarial. The most important point, you may study for other course with this. Like engineering or graduation. In fact, if some of your course match with the course of Actuarial. You don’t have to write the exam twice. Your regular course marks are accepted by Actuarial society. - NID:
National Institute of Design (NID) is not a very common name among general students. But, it is a very popular name among those who know even a little about design, graphics or creativity courses in India. This is the best institute to learn about designing. One may just think the need of the students from this institute in market. - NDA:
National Defense Academy (NDA) is a very popular exam at 10+2 level. But, popularity of engineering has lowered the no. of quality students for this exam. Yeah, through this exam you may not earn handsome money after NDA. Also, course is physically a bit tough. But, yeah, the proud to be a soldier of India can never be compared with money. Students now a day seek fun and entertainment during course. That fun is not here. But, still here you will get adventure, high esteem and position in society. Pay is not good. But, perks are good. Overall, those who don’t want to traditional, boring corporate jobs can join Indian Army through this course. - NIFT:
National institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) is a popular brand name. The course here attracts those who want to go in glamor life. No doubt this course needs creativity. Without creativity, you may not perform well. But, yeah this is a high paying and booming sector in India. - NLSIU:
National Law School of India University (NLSIU) is the best institute in India for Law. As economically, India is developing rapidly. Lots of MNCs are coming each year in India. All of them need law personnel. But, students in India are crazy about engineering and management. Other courses don’t get the best quality. So is the case with NLSIU. Students getting here are good but not the best. So, exam is easy to crack with little effort. But, the money after this course is very good. - IIIT:
Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) is a project of Indian government to satisfy the demand of IT professionals in India with quality candidates. Courses here are mainly related to IT or computer science. Seats are few in number. But, competition is not as much as for IIT. Some of IIT conduct separate exam. Some take students from AIEEE. This is best course for computer related if you don’t get selected in IITs or few NITs. - NIT:
National Institute of Technology (NIT) is institutes which were earlier known as Regional Engineering College. These colleges are good, reputed, and old and get good placements too. Earlier, students get admission in these colleges via state engineering examination. Students were not evenly balanced in sort of quality than sorting on the basis of state. Also, as students can’t aim at these institutes directly. Hence, these colleges could not make such a reputation as an IIT. These are premier institutes but not the popular ones. These institutes have infrastructure and all sort of facility to produce best engineers. But, they don’t get the best students. - CMI:
Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) is one of the best institutes in India for Mathematics and Physics. This institute has gained much reputation in very less time. No doubt for research preference this could be on top of your list. - NSHM:
(NSHM) is the best institute in India for Hotel and Hospitability management. This institute gives you high prospect for success with growing demands of Hospitability in India. - Merchant Navy:
Merchant navy is a high paying job. It is course for become a crew member of a ship. The best institute in this field is TS Chanakya which takes students through IIT JEE. But, it has a separate selection process. Other institutes of Merchant Navy also have the same prospect. No doubt if you want to earn real money, Merchant navy should be the best choice. - IISER/NISER:
Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) and National Institute of Science Education Research (NISER) is a project of government to satisfy the scientist need of India. This is a full government funded institutes. You will get handsome stipends to study here. Future prospect is also good. Students from here can easily get admissions anywhere in the world for higher education. Also, prospect in India is good. Scientist are in demand everywhere. Government is thinking to open research gates for private owners in India. So, students from these institutes will be in High demand in near future. - Aeronautics:
Aeronautics is a high paying field. In India, this sector is on boom and is expected to need three fold more professionals in coming 10 years. Best institute to get in this field is some IIT where this course is taught. Like IIT Kanpur. But, there are other institutes too who can give same prospects as aeronautics from IITs. These are IIA Group of Institutions. Know more about it here.
On the whole, if you look closely at the list above. These are the best institutes of their respective fields. Hence, we could conclude easily each field which have high prospect can come in the list above.
Also, Keep this in mind nearly every field is open for mathematics students (except medical). So, not just IIT should be your prime stop. You may go to any of these and become successful. Some will give you high reputation and some will give you high money. Some even both. But, try to think beyond IITs. There are hopes beyond IIT.
Note: I’ll give detail about all these exam in coming future. The details will cover all aspect institute by institute for each class. Stay in touch.

Hi,
You said students who come to NLSIU, Bangalore are good but not the best. However I read somewhere that many students get admitted to the institute after rejecting seats at IIT’s, opting for a career in law instead of Engineering. Is this statement justified?
P.S.- I’m appearing for CLAT 2011.
Abhishek Rukhaiyar says
Yes, I still believe that the institute not get the best students. ISI have many students who get AIR in top ten in IIT JEE still they choose ISI. Even though some who crack IIT JEE with poor rank may opt for NLSIU, but it is hard to find regular trend that top rankers of IIT JEE are going for NLSIU.
It is a general trend that the most attractive and sure shot successful careers attract more student. Same is the case with Engineering and IIT JEE. They attract the genius minds towards them.

SCRA AND ISI ARE SUPERIOR TO THE IIT IN EVERY ASPECT . NICE ARTICLE .

PLZ GIVE SOME INFO FOR MATHEMATICS STUDENTS INTERESTED IN “STOCKS”;,
Abhishek Rukhaiyar says
At this time I have not much info about Direct and specific involvement of Math related students in Stock market, not at graduation level. There is a field Financial Risk Management where maths student may excel.
Rahul M says
Sir,
Could you give some informations regarding some top institutions offering courses in PHYSICS at undergraduate level in India?
Abhishek Rukhaiyar says
The best is M.Sc. Integrated course from IIT. Other than this CMI have a course in physics, a good course. Lastly, NISERs and IISERs have B.Sc. physics courses. All these have a very good scope and helpful, if you are aiming higher studies from some foreign university with scholarship.
Akshit Kumar says
IIT-JEE is not the end.You have various other engineering exams like AIEEE and BITSAT. These help you to get placement in institutes like NIT’S ,IIIT’S and BITS-PILANI(which is better than IIT). So one should’nt get discouraged after not getting selection in any of the IIT’S.

Hi Abhisek, i have a doubt regarding ISI(Indian Statistical Institute). What is the criteria used for admissions into ISI?Is there a seperate entrance test?
Abhishek Rukhaiyar says
there is no special criteria for admission in ISI, no min. marks or any such things, plus that doesn’t matter at all. Yeah there is a separate exam for ISI on the first Sunday of May every year. Forms are open to be filled in around feb/march.

hi Abhishek,
i just loved the article that you have posted.it is indeed very helpful. currently i am doing BAF(accounting and finance) and i am interested in mathematics.can you please provide me with some really nice options other than CA.
Abhishek Rukhaiyar says
If you are interested in mathematics, actuarial might be the best option to try other than CA. An actuarial is required to apply probability and statistics to calculate the amount a premium that should be paid against an insurance policy.

thanks a lot,sir
i had just passed 10th and had much tension regarding future careers in case Iit jee is not cleared(you never know).
i really wanted to know about courses with good prospects.
your every article is very helpful.
a must read for every student.
Sankha Narayan Guria says
What if I have both options- 5 year Integrated MSc in IIT Kharagpur and Undergraduate Physics course at CMI. Which one should i prefer?
Abhishek Rukhaiyar says
Hello Sankha Narayan Guria,
Sorry for late reply.
Your problem is very interesting, it kept me thinking for 2-3 days. I thought by every possible aspect. I will try to give some details. I assume that you are willing to go for research after the courses in consideration.
No doubt IIT is a very popular name and the name tag will help you to get a recognition every where you say about it. CMI is very new and unpopular name amongst general public. But, CMI is basically for making researchers and scientists.
If we talk about environment of study you will get much better environment for deep study in CMI. All the student either in your class or your hostel have only one aim to study every time. In IIT normal engineering students mostly study just before exams. They study along with enjoyment. I remember after during my first semester exam at ISI Kolkata, one of my classmates friend came from IIT Kharagpur after giving semester exam. He said their the environment is much easier and less tensed. We at ISI could not skip to avoid our studies for even 3-4 days or we will get beind. We could not organize any event by total dedication. So, environment of study at a research institute is totally different.
Even in your batch there will be some who opted for the branch as they could not got any other branch of their choice. They are not very much interested in higher studies in physics.
If we compare about fees too. IIT will cost you around 60-70K yearly, CMI will give you stipend and you to spend only for mess and hostel.
In my view point, CMI is better option. Chances are equal at both place for opportunity for further studies from foreign university. IIT have a plus point that it may help you in placement if you think about going for job in Industry after course completion. CMI could not help you here. They just concentrate on research.

no doubt IiIT Allahabad…..
mishu khanna says
i take a chance after class 12th but not able to make any iit or nits should i leave the hope to become an engineer or being prepared again as a partial dropper plz suggeset me i am so disturbed as i am intersted in maths &phy but not in chem .plz sir suggest me something i am so tensed about my future
Abhishek Rukhaiyar says
First of all only IIT and NITs does not make engineers. There are other institutions too. I would not suggest you to take one more drop. But, yeah you could take in any other engineering college. About chemistry, not all branches of engineering need expert in chemistry. Just take admission in an average engineering college. An engineering degree will help you a lot than any normal degree. If you have any more problem ask.
mishu khanna says
no sir i am not taking drop again but still i have a chance for jee so i think to be prepared as partial drooper.i take admission in a average college but also kept tried at my best .is it noyt good
mishu khanna says
and sir after enough studying PCM for competitions and not perform well in this ,and when many of my friends make into iits /nits it feel like that my future and career is not secure and succesful lkike them i stand always last among them.it feels me like that nothing is good for me and i never become succesful.

I liked your article very much. It addressed many issues regarding how to prepare for JEE. I have bookmarked this page to show my daughter who is currently preparing for JEE. Do you have any words of wisdom for parents of aspiring students? My child scores well in Chemistry and is struggling with Maths & Physics. I have advised her to prepare excellently for Chem and study to her strengths in Math and Physics so that she can make the subject cutoffs. Is this kind of selective preparation a wise strategy? Pl. advise. You views will be sincerely appreciated.

DEAR SIR YOU HAVE ENLIGHTED MANY CANDLES SINKING IN A HOPE TO REACH THE BOAT OF IIT , I HAVE SEEN MANY PEOPLE LONGING AND DESEPERATELY DISSAPOINTING AFTER , I AM TOO ONE OF THEM , I AM NOW DOIN CA CPT COURSE.
yuvi says
i felt little pinched after iit failure , but now i am somewhat happy with ca , one with pcm in 10+2 can easily catch stats and maths.
jyothi , i think u should go to http://www.icai.org so as to gain full information on it . starting is ca cpt. then ipcc and then final . feeling good after sharing all this , my email address is wrong.
Gurmeet Singh Randhir says
Dear Sir,
Thanks for your highly valuable piece of advice for IIT aspirants, who could not qualify this year exam. But it was very cruel for CBSE to club all the opportunities only through JEE Main. Earlier, one had number of options, if he did not do well in IIT Entrance. But now if you have slipped in IIT Main, there is no other option and all the doors are shut for you. Earlier one could try his luck in AIEEE,DCE,Thapar,JP Institue, and any bright student was able to get in to equally good institute. Hence this year batch has met a very tragic end as all the experiments were made at their cost. Anyway, do you think Shiv Nadar University or NIIT University can be considered as good alternative. Please guide.
Abhishek Rukhaiyar says
Hello Gurmeet,
I have not much idea about these institutions. I share my experience here. But, I’m not very much updated about these universities.
kanika says
Sir,
I always read your articles posted by you , they are full of knowledge..in my first attempt for jee mains i could’nt qualify because day befor exam i studied till 3 am moreover i did my 12 from cbse did’nt got sufficient time for good preparation….i wrote jee mains on 07 Apr i got 70 marks and cutoff was 113.
i got 87 % in 12 th cbse board 95 in chem and 90 in physics.
now there are 2 options for me either to drop for 1 year and take coaching for jee coz during my 11th and 12th i did’nt took any coaching for jee….2nd option is to take admission in delhi university either for honours(chemistry) or newly added four year integrated course which is equivalent to b tech and then i can do my m.tech in iit colledge by doing hard work….sir please tell me should i drop or take admission in university like delhi university (i) if i qualify , (ii) if i not qualify for delhi university.
Nandini says
Hello sir ,
I have passed my 10th . I so wanna get into ISI . Do I opt for MPC ( with IIT coaching ) or shall I opt MEC (with CA coaching ) ? Which is better ?
P.S I’m doing 11th with MPC..IIT … but feel there is no use studying IIT level Physics n Chemistry when I have to end up at ISI only through Maths.
Awaiting a quick reply.
Abhishek Rukhaiyar says
what is MEC ….MPC i assume is standard PCM….
For ISI ou might not need Physics. But, you need some basic idea about physics and chemistry too. IIT level is tough, but don’t think ISI is cupcake. Infact, getting in ISI is much tougher. You need to keep your backup options always open.
